Thanks for the information. I generally do not frequent but a few South Dakota blogs and was unaware of comments on them. While your comment gets a bit personal, it does seem to address a situation that is a problem with blogs.

Dana, The reason I criticize blogs by blogging about their failings is the alternative to censorship and repression. I don't know why totalitarian measures are always suggested when one notes that some verbal activity is debased and worthless. People have the right to express themselves; other people have the right to evaluate their expressions and to point out when they lend nothing to the human dialogue.

The predictable consequences of my observations could be that my readers be more discerning in the way they read blog posts. That is the point of rhetorical criticism.David Newquisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04937837001343753140noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5371904020164697258.post-71389072433221778752007-02-17T20:18:00.000-06:002007-02-17T20:18:00.000-06:00"I have nothing against blogging. I prefer to avoid such assertions. And so do many people who want humankind to stay in control of its technology, not be controlled by it....

"Words generally precede the acts."

I wonder what political and social acts would be the predictable consequence of your observations here? Censorship, repression?Delaware Watchhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13619357338844485803noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5371904020164697258.post-48019058943211293592007-02-15T21:28:00.000-06:002007-02-15T21:28:00.000-06:00Dr. Newquist,I wish to get something on the record...Dr. Newquist,

I wish to get something on the record regarding the petulant snit and dishonesty with which Epp received a comment of mine. I have a comment on his blog post that suggests that he read posts before commenting on them. He replied with this:
"I read the whole bloody post. English is my mother tongue. I think I understood it perfectly well. In a nutshell, the good doctor said nearly all blogs and bloggers stink."

I, in turn, replied that it was important to note qualifications when one quoted or characterized someone else's work, and I reproduced this paragraph from you"

"This is not to say that some blogs and some posts do not contribute to discourse that informs and elevates. But few people have time to sort through the mean and petty and scurrilous to engage human discourse on an elevating plane. While it may be instructive for everyone to be reminded that malicious bigotry is a large force that threatens our democracy, it is more efficacious to frequent those published words that people of knowledge and discernment have edited for us"

I noted that you certainly do not state that all blogs and bloggers stink.
He chose to delete my comment.

He demonstrates exactly those qualities of pettiness, meanness, and, I fear in his case, shysterism that typifies so much of what goes on in blogs. I hope you will not delete this comment, because I think petty little men have entirely too much to say in this world, and I hope to help correct that.

"Vickihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03687070165352252812noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5371904020164697258.post-6563242430670256762007-02-14T21:34:00.000-06:002007-02-14T21:34:00.000-06:00I left message on Epp's blog pointing out where he...I left message on Epp's blog pointing out where he chose to ignore an important qualification in your post.
